Susan Magdalane Boyle is a Scottish vocalist who was born on April 1, 1961. She soared to stardom in 2009 after singing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables on the third series of Britain’s Got Talent.I Dreamed a Dream, Boyle’s debut studio album, was released in November 2009 and quickly became the best-selling debut album in the United Kingdom, surpassing Leona Lewis’ Spirit.

According to the Official Charts Company, I Dreamed a Dream set a record for the most first-week sales by a debut album.With the release of I Dreamed a Dream and its main singles, “I Dreamed a Dream” and “Wild Horses,” Boyle made £5 million (£6.9 million now) in her first year of stardom.

Boyle’s success continued with her second studio album, The Gift (2010), in which she became only the third act in history to top both the UK and US album charts twice in the same year, and was followed by her third studio album, Someone to Watch Over Me, in which she became only the third act ever to top both the UK and US album charts twice in the same year (2011).

She went on to release studio albums such as Standing Ovation: The Greatest Songs from the Stage (2012), Home for Christmas (2013), Hope (2014), A Wonderful World (2016), and Ten (2019).Boyle returned to Britain’s Got Talent on May 12, 2012, to perform as a guest in the final, singing “You’ll See.”

Boyle was the youngest of four brothers and five sisters, and was born when her mother was 45 years old.  She was raised believing she had been denied oxygen for a brief while during a difficult birth, resulting in a learning handicap.  In 2012–13, however, she was told she had been misdiagnosed and has Asperger syndrome with an IQ of “above average.” Boyle claims to have been bullied as a child.

Boyle’s quick rise to prominence was aided by websites such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.In the first 72 hours, the most popular YouTube video entry of her audition received approximately 2.5 million views.  The YouTube video was the most popular storey on Digg[102] the day after the performance and made the first page of Reddit.

The audition performance had been viewed over 66 million times in less than a week, setting an online record, and her Wikipedia biography garnered nearly half a million page views. Within nine days, 103 million video views were recorded on 20 different websites. According to the Los Angeles Times, her YouTube fame may be attributed in part to the wide spectrum of emotion crammed into a short movie that was “ideal for the Internet.”

Her audition was named the most watched YouTube video of the year in December 2009, with over 120 million views, more than three times the second most popular video. In addition, YouTube picked Boyle’s debut on-camera interview with Scots journalist Richard Mooney for her hometown newspaper the West Lothian Courier as the Most Memorable Video of 2009.

 

After being uploaded to YouTube on April 14, 2009, the video became extremely popular. Many publications throughout the world (including China,, Brazil, and the Middle East) covered Boyle’s performance. Later, the British press began referring to her as ‘SuBo,’ an abbreviated variant of her name.

Several observers in the United States found connections between Boyle’s performance and that of Paul Potts.  “Britain’s newest music sensation,” according to ABC News, and Boyle was dubbed “The Woman Who Shut Up Simon Cowell” in the Entertainment section. Boyle appeared on STV’s The Five Thirty Show a week after her performance on Britain’s Got Talent.

She was interviewed on CBS’s The Early Show, NBC’s Today, and FOX’s America’s Newsroom via satellite. as well as Oprah Winfrey’s show. Larry King Live is broadcasting via satellite. Jay Leno also played her in drag, joking that they were linked due to his mother’s Scottish ancestry.

Boyle sang as a guest artist in the 2009 edition of Khaku Uta Gassen, an annual songfest in Tokyo, at the invitation of NHK, a major Japanese broadcaster.The MCs presented her as the en kashu (lit. “cheering singer”), and she took the stage with Takuya Kimura, singing “I Dreamed a Dream.”

Despite the fact that Boyle was not eligible for the 2010 Grammy Awards, host Stephen Colbert paid tribute to him at the event, telling the crowd, “You may be the coolest people in the world, but your profession was saved this year by a 48-year-old Scottish cat lady in sensible shoes.”

Boyle had previously sparked outrage when he was not nominated for any of the 2010 Brit Awards categories. Boyle continues to reside in the family home, a four-bedroom ex-council property in Blackburn that she bought with her money in 2010.  Her father passed away in the 1990s, and her siblings (two sisters and four brothers) had all left the house.

Boyle was never married and devoted her life to care for her ailing mother, who died in 2007 at the age of 91. When Bridget Boyle died, her daughter “wouldn’t come out for three or four days or answer the door or the phone,” according to a neighbour.  Boyle is a devout Roman Catholic who sang in the Blackburn church choir.

Boyle continues to help out at her church as a volunteer, visiting elderly members of the congregation in their homes. Prior to notoriety, Boyle described her daily existence as “mundane” and “regular” on an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2010.Boyle was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome in 2012. In December 2013, she revealed her diagnosis in a BBC interview.

When asked in November 2012 if she had attempted Internet dating to find love, Boyle responded she was too afraid, adding, “Knowing my luck, I’d go out on a date and you’d find my limbs spread about various Blackburn dustbins!”Boyle endorsed the Better Together campaign to retain Scotland in the United Kingdom during the 2014 independence referendum in July 2013. She claimed as a result of this, “I am a proud and patriotic Scot who is devoted to my heritage and nation.

“However, I am not a nationalist,” he continues, “and we have been able to maintain our proud identity while being a part of Britain.”” Boyle was rumoured to be dating her first boyfriend in November 2014, who was “about the same age” as her.On January 26, 2010, Boyle performed among other famous singers on Simon Cowell’s charity single “Everybody Hurts” for Haiti Relief.


Boyle performed in the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen, Denmark, on January 30, 2010, at the Indsamling Charity Gala, a telethon for Haiti and Africa. Boyle has appeared on three of the most well-known charity telethons in the United Kingdom. She performed for the Sports Relief charity on BBC1 on March 19, 2010.

She sang a duet of “I Know Him So Well” with Peter Kay on the BBC’s Comic Relief on March 18, 2011, and the duet was released on CD, DVD, and MP3 download to raise additional funds for charity. The CD was ranked #21 on the all-time list of sold Comic Relief CDs. She has performed for the BBC Children in Need telethon five times: on November 19, 2010,November 18, 2011, and November 16, 2012. on the 16th of November, 2013.  On November 14, 2014.

Boyle gave a performance at the Pride of Britain Awards in London on November 10, 2010.Boyle sang at the Scottish Variety Awards in Glasgow on March 19, 2011, and the proceeds were donated to the Cash for Kids Charity. Boyle travelled to Bath with the Lothian Special Olympics Team for the Special Olympics Great Britain National Summer Games on August 28, 2013.

In the evening, she performed at the Special Olympics GB Opening Ceremony at the Royal Crescent in Bath, England, then stayed to see the activities and present out medals to the victors of the first day. Boyle was scheduled to perform at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice 30th Anniversary Variety Performance at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow on October 27, 2013.
