The Unabomber, also known as Theodore John Kaczynski ( born May 22, 1942), is an American domestic terrorist and former mathematics professor. He was a gifted mathematician who gave up his academic career in 1969 to live a simple life. Between 1978 and 1995, he carried out a statewide bombing campaign against those he claimed were developing modern technology and destroying the environment, killing three individuals and injuring 23 others. He published a social critique against industrialisation and supporting a sort of anarchism focused on nature. Although Kaczynski’s criticism of civilization are comparable to anarcho-primitivism, he rejects it.
Kaczynski began his studies at the University of Michigan in 1962, earning master’s and PhD degrees in mathematics in 1964 and 1967, respectively. He had applied to the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago, both of which accepted him but did not offer him a teaching position or financial aid. Michigan was not his first choice for postgraduate education; he had also applied to the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago, both of which accepted him but did not offer him a teaching position or financial aid. Michigan gave him a teaching position and a $2,310 yearly stipend (equivalent to $19,763 in 2020). Kaczynski studied complex analysis, notably geometric function theory, at Michigan. Professor Peter Duren had this to say about Kaczynski: “He was a unique individual. He didn’t fit in with the rest of the graduate students. He seemed to be considerably more concentrated on his task. He was driven by a desire to find mathematical truth.” “It is not enough to say he was clever,” said George Piranian, another of his Michigan mathematics instructors. In his 18 classes at the university, Kaczynski scored 1 F, 5 Bs, and 12 As. He remarked in 2006 that he had bad recollections of Michigan and that the university’s grading standards were inadequate, as indicated by his comparatively good marks. Kaczynski, at 25 years old, began teaching mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, as an acting assistant professor in late 1967. Kaczynski was promoted to assistant professor in September 1968, indicating that he was on track for tenure. His teaching assessments indicate that he was unpopular with his students: he appeared uneasy in front of the class, lectured directly from the textbook, and refused to answer questions. On June 30, 1969, Kaczynski resigned without explanation. J. W. Addison, the chairman of the mathematics department, described it as a “sudden and unexpected” retirement. The Los Angeles Times questioned mathematicians about Kaczynski’s studies and conclusions in 1996.
A package discovered in a University of Utah corridor in 1981 was brought to campus police and defused by a bomb team. A bomb was mailed to Patrick C. Fischer, a professor at Vanderbilt University, in May of the following year. Fischer was on vacation in Puerto Rico at the time, and his secretary, Janet Smith, was injured in the face and arms when the bomb went off. Hugh Scrutton, a 38-year-old computer business owner from Sacramento, California, was killed by a nail-and-splinter-loaded explosive planted in the parking lot of his business in late 1985. On February 20, 1987, a similar attack on a computer business occurred in Salt Lake City, Utah. When Gary Wright attempted to remove the explosive camouflaged as a piece of timber from the store’s parking area, he was wounded. The blast destroyed nerves in Wright’s left arm and shattered his torso with nearly 200 pieces of shrapnel. Kaczynski was apprehended while detonating the device in Salt Lake City. As a result, a depiction of the suspect as a hooded man with a moustache and aviator sunglasses was widely circulated. Thomas Mosser, a Burson-Marsteller executive, was killed in 1994 after receiving a postal bomb at his home in New Jersey. Kaczynski claimed in a letter to The New York Times that he sent the bomb because of Mosser’s efforts rebuilding Exxon’s public image following the Exxon Valdez oil catastrophe. The 1995 assassination of Gilbert Brent Murray, president of the timber industry lobbying group California Forestry Association, by a mail bomb addressed to previous president William Dennison, who had retired, was followed by the assassination of Gilbert Brent Murray, president of the timber industry lobbying group California Forestry Association, by a mail bomb addressed to previous president William Dennison, who had retired. Shortly after, geneticist Phillip Sharp of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology got a threatening letter.
