The University of Texas at Austin (often known as Texas or UT) has an intercollegiate football team that represents the university in the sport of American football. As a member of the Big 12 Conference, the Longhorns play in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (previously Division I-A). Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, in Austin, Texas, is where they play their home games.

The Longhorns are ranked third and seventh on the all-time wins and win-loss lists, respectively, with over 900 victories and a win-loss % of.705. In addition, the legendary programme has won four national championships, 32 conference titles, 100 First Team All-Americans (61 consensus), and two Heisman Trophy winners. The Texas Longhorns football programme, which dates back to 1893, is one of the most prestigious and storied in the country.

Hall of Fame coach Dana X. Bible directed the team from 1936 to 1946,and then Hall of Fame coach Darrell K Royal led the club from 1957 to 1976, winning three national championships. The first and second championships took place in 1963 and 1969, respectively. For the first time since 1936, ESPN placed Texas as the seventh most renowned college football programme. The football programme was valued at $805 million in 2012, higher than several NFL franchises.

Texas is recognised for its post-season visits, ranking second in bowl game appearances (55), fourth in bowl game victories (29), most Southwest Conference football championships (27), and most Cotton Bowl Classic appearances and victories (11). Other NCAA records include 108 winning seasons out of 122 total seasons, 24 seasons with ten or more victories, nine undefeated seasons, and 26 seasons with only one loss or tie.

From 1936 to 2012, the Longhorns football teams were ranked in the top twenty-five 48 times and the top ten 28 times in the AP or coaches’ polls, accounting for 86.8% of the time. Texas has won four national championships in Division I-A (1963, 1969, 1970, and 2005) as well as 32 conference titles (3 Big 12 Conference, 27 Southwest Conference, and 2 Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association).

Two Longhorn players, Earl Campbell (1977) and Ricky Williams (1998), have received the Heisman Trophy,”college football’s most coveted individual prize.”The College Football Hall of Fame has inducted seventeen Longhorns, while the Pro Football Hall of Fame has inducted four of them.Texas had the third-best all-time record at the start of the 2019 season, with a 909–371–33 (.705) record.

By

the completion of the season, Texas’ record had fallen to 916–375–33 (.704), putting them in fourth place in NCAA Division I FBS history.Since its inception, the stadium has been extended numerous times, and now contains 100,119 permanent seats, the nation’s first high-definition video projection in a collegiate venue, dubbed “Godzillatron,” and a newly refurbished Joe Jamail Field with FieldTurf. With 103,507 people on September 15, 2018, DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium and the Big 12 set a new attendance record versus USC.

Construction of permanent seats and an upper deck in the south end zone, completely encircling the playing field, is the last planned phase of the stadium’s expansion. After the south end zone is fully enclosed, the stadium’s seating capacity is scheduled to exceed 112,000, making DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium the largest football stadium in North America, surpassing Michigan Stadium. However, neither a timetable nor money have been allocated for the last building phase to completely enclose the south end zone.

Various sources suggest that this phase will take 10 to 15 years to complete, yet on March 11, 2014, an exploratory group was formed to look into the stadium extension in conjunction with the construction of the Dell Medical School on campus. From 1887through 1924, the Longhorns’ football team played at Clark Field before moving to DKR. On the University of Texas’s campus, Clark Field was a wooden-structured stadium.

On October 25, 1924, the Longhorns played their final game at Clark Field before relocating to Memorial Stadium. That day, the Texas Longhorns tied the Florida Gators 7–7. During their stay at Clark Field, Texas compiled a 135–23–3 record. The Red River Shootout has been played on a neutral field since 1900, when Oklahoma was still a US territory. Since 2005, the football game has been referred to as the “SBC Red River Rivalry”(changed to AT&T Red River Rivalry in 2006 after SBC joined with AT&T), a decision that has been chastised for both its commercialism and political correctness.

During the week of the Red River Rivalry, the University of Texas hosts its annual Torchlight Parade.  The Dallas Morning News polled 119 Division 1A football coaches in 2005 to find out which rivalry game in college football was the best in the country. The game between Texas and Oklahoma came in third place.  The game is usually significant for the conference or maybe the country. In 60 of the 65 meetings since 1945, one or both of the two teams have been ranked among the top 25 in the country.

Between 1940 and 1947 and 1958–1965, Texas beat the Sooners an unprecedented eight times in a row. In 1963, when Oklahoma was ranked No. 1 and Texas was ranked No. 2, Texas won the game 28–7 on their way to their first officially recognised national championship. In 2009, Texas clinched a 16–13 victory over OU in the fourth quarter, bringing the series to a close for the first time. The game has sparked debate as well. The 1976 meeting was tense because Oklahoma’s coaching staff was suspected of eavesdropping on Texas’ preparations, a claim later substantiated by former OU head coach Barry Switzer.

Texas defeated then-No. 1 Oklahoma by 45 points in the 2008 season, however despite winning, the Longhorns were unable to advance to the Big 12 Championship game due to BCS rankings. Six of the last ten appearances (2000, 2003–2005, 2008, 2009) featured one of the BCS National Championship Game participants, including national crowns won by Oklahoma in 2000 and Texas in 2005. The Longhorns and Sooners met in a Red River Rivalry game on October 6, 2018, that will go down in history.

The Longhorns were knotted at 45 with the Sooners with just over two minutes remaining in the game after surrendering a 21-point fourth-quarter lead. Time began to run out as the Longhorns marched down the field. The Longhorns won 48–45 thanks to a Cameron Dicker 40-yard field goal, ending a two-year drought in the Red River Rivalry.

Through the 2020 season, Texas holds a 62–49–5 series lead. The Texas Longhorns defeated the Texas Tech Matadors (as the club was known until 1937) for the first time in 1928, winning 12–0. Before 1960, the teams had only met nine times, with Texas leading Tech 8–1.  Both institutions competed in the Southwest Conference each year from 1960 to 1995. The Big 12 Conference has been home to both schools since 1996.

The Texas Tech University System was founded in 1996, and the system’s first chancellor, John T. Montford, a former member of the Texas State Senate, began the exchange of the Chancellor’s Spurs, a travelling trophy between the two institutions. The spurs, which are gold and silver and etched with Texas Tech’s Double T and Texas’ interlocking UT emblem, were initially presented to Texas following a 38–32 victory over the Red Raiders in Lubbock.

Through the 2021 season, Texas leads the series 54–17 all-time.Texas and Arkansas played for the first time in 1894, with Texas winning 54–0. The matchup between the two colleges used to determine which team would win the Southwest Conference championship back in the day. Overall, Texas won 71% of the time, resulting in a ferocious and passionate rivalry. The two programmes have met 78 times, with Texas owning a 56–22–0 advantage, and have played in a number of high-profile contests.

The game in 1969 was the actual Game of the Century, marking the 100th year of collegiate football and culminating in the Longhorns’ national victory in 1969. Fans of the Arkansas Razorbacks are still bitter over this game.  Arkansas led the game for the majority of it, only for Texas to come back and win 15–14 in the closing minutes. Former President Richard Nixon attended the game and in the locker room proclaimed the Longhorns the National Champions.

Despite the fact that the 1969 Texas-Arkansas game is renowned as “The Big Shootout,” it has not been played annually since Arkansas joined the Southeastern Conference in 1991. Many Longhorn and Razorback fans, however, still regard this game as a major rivalry. In September 2008, Texas defeated Arkansas 52–10 in a football game. The 2014 Texas Bowl featured Texas against Arkansas, with Arkansas coming out on top 31–7. The regular season meeting between Texas and Arkansas is slated for 2021.Through the 2021 season, Texas holds a 56–23 series advantage.
