The Weeknd (born February 16, 1990) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and record producer.  Tesfaye’s music explores escapism, romanticism, and melancholy, and is typically influenced by personal experiences.  Three Grammy Awards, nineteen Billboard Music Awards, fifteen Juno Awards, six American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and an Academy Award nomination are among his many achievements.

Tesfaye, who was born and raised in Toronto, began his recording career in 2009 by releasing music anonymously on YouTube. He co-founded the XO record label two years later and released the critically acclaimed mixtapes House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence, soon acquiring a reputation for his dark style of contemporary and alternative R&B, as well as the mystery surrounding his identity.

Tesfaye signed with Republic Records in 2012, and his mixtapes were re-released in the compilation album Trilogy. In 2013, he published his debut studio album Kiss Land, on which he experimented with dark wave. His chamber pop and R&B ballad “Earned It,” from the Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) album, received the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Beauty Behind the Madness (2015) was Tesfaye’s second studio album, and it became his first number one album on the US Billboard 200, as well as one of the year’s best-selling albums, with the singles “Can’t Feel My Face” and “The Hills” topping the US Billboard Hot 100. Beauty Behind the Madness was also nominated for Album of the Year and won the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album.

His third studio album, Starboy (2016), was a commercial triumph, with the number-one song of the same name. Starboy received the Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album, just like his predecessor. Tesfaye’s critically praised fourth studio album After Hours (2020) explored new wave and dream pop, featuring the number-one singles “Heartless” and “Save Your Tears,” as well as the chart-topping “Blinding Lights.”


His dance-pop-inspired fifth studio album Dawn FM (2022) was likewise well-received, featuring the top-ten hit “Take My Breath” in the United States. On February 16, 1990, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye[a] was born in Toronto, Ontario, to Ethiopian immigrants Makkonen Tesfaye and Samrawit Hailu.

He is an only child who was reared in Scarborough by his grandmother and mother. after his parents divorced . He acquired Amharic while living with his grandmother, and he spoke it with his mother. He went to Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church services.  “I saw him vaguely when I was six, and then again when I was 11 or 12, and he had a new family and kids,” he said of his father.

I have no idea where he lives, but I’d like to spend a night with him. I’m sure he’s a fantastic person. I never made any judgments about him. He wasn’t abusive, alcoholic, or a jerk. He simply wasn’t present.” Tesfaye has compared his adolescent years to the movie “Kids Without AIDS.” He claimed he started smoking marijuana when he was eleven years old and went on to take ecstasy, oxycodone, Xanax, cocaine, psilocybin, and ketamine.

He

admitted that he frequently shoplifted in order to supplement his drug habit.  He went to Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute and West Hill Collegiate Institute. He dropped out of school in 2007 and went to Parkdale, Toronto. Tesfaye published his debut mixtape House of Balloons in its original form with the original mixes and samples in March 2021 to commemorate its tenth anniversary.

Limited edition clothing, including shirts, trucker hats, hoodies, and an exclusive vinyl, was also published alongside the reissue in partnership with architect Daniel Arsham. Tesfaye published his second 2011 mixtape Thursday six months later, in August, to commemorate its tenth anniversary.

Limited edition merchandise, designed by artist Mr. Yanen, was published to accompany the reissue, just like it was for House of Balloons. Four months later, in December, Tesfaye published Echoes of Silence, his final mixtape from 2011, to commemorate its tenth anniversary.

As with the previous two mixtapes, the reissue was accompanied by limited edition goods made by illustrator Hajime Sorayama. In May of 2021, Tesfaye began teasing new music. In an interview with Variety, he said, “If the last record is the After Hours of the Night, then The Dawn is coming.”  Tesfaye sang “Save Your Tears” at the Brit Awards on May 11th.

He also received his first Brit Award for International Male Solo Artist, which was given to him by Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States. Tesfaye performed “Save Your Tears” at the Billboard Music Awards on May 24th. He received a record sixteen nominations and won ten, including Top Artist and Top Hot 100 Song. “The After Hours are done, and The Dawn is coming,” Tesfaye teased as he accepted his accolades.

He and Ariana Grande performed the remix of “Save Your Tears” at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on May 28. Tesfaye had an appearance on Doja Cat’s track “You Right” from her third studio album Planet Her, which was released on June 25.  On July 22, he collaborated with Young Thug on Belly’s single “Better Believe” from his third studio album See You Next Wednesday.

Tesfaye posted a clip of new song to social media on August 2, 2021. Later that day, he covered GQ’s first global issue, in September 2021. Tesfaye then revealed his track “Take My Breath,” which was released on August 6 in cooperation with NBC Sports and the 2020 Summer Olympics.  Later same month, he sang lead vocals on Kanye West’s ninth studio album, Donda, on the tune “Hurricane.”

Tesfaye said that his fifth studio album was finished on October 4, 2021, on an episode of Memento Mori, and that he was waiting on a “few of essential people that are key to the narrative.” He also mentioned that he will appear in a handful of tracks that will be released prior to the release of the album.

Tesfaye revealed on October 18 that his forthcoming tour, dubbed The After Hours Tour, will be held solely in stadiums due to venue constraints, and will kick off in the summer of 2022. The After Hours til Dawn Stadium Tour has been titled and will feature parts from his fourth and fifth studio albums.


Tesfaye had an appearance on Swedish House Mafia’s single “Moth to a Flame,” off their studio album Paradise Again, on October 22. He made an appearance on Post Malone’s single “One Right Now” on November 5th.  On November 11, he was featured in Rosala’s third studio album Motomami’s hit “La Fama.”

FKA Twigs’ single “Tears in the Club” off her debut mixtape Caprisongs featured Tesfaye on December 16.  The following day, on December 17, he was featured on Aaliyah’s posthumous album Unstoppable’s hit “Poison.” Tesfaye’s fifth studio album Dawn FM was released to critical acclaim on January 7, 2022.

 

The album opened at number two on the Billboard 200 with 148,000 copies sold, marking Tesfaye’s ninth top ten appearance and his second non-consecutive number two debut. Tesfaye confirmed at the New York Comic-Con in October 2017, after teasing on Instagram,that a Starboy comic book in collaboration with Marvel Comics would be released on June 13, 2018,with the title character being a superhero modelled after himself.

Tesfaye’s label, XO, collaborated with A Bathing Ape on an apparel collection in August 2018 and again in January 2020. Tesfaye purchased a stake in esports firm OverActive Media Group, which owns Splyce and the Overwatch League team Toronto Defiant, in April 2019 and will serve as the brand’s worldwide ambassador.

Tesfaye teamed with TD Bank to launch Black HXOUSE (also known as HXOUSE), an entrepreneurial initiative, on August 31, 2020. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a $221 million joint venture with HXOUSE for Black Canadian entrepreneurs on September 9, 2020.

Tesfaye stated in late March 2021 that a collection of visual artwork and an unreleased song dubbed “Acephalous” would be auctioned off as a non-fungible token (NFT). The auction began on April 3 at 11:00 a.m. PST on the Nifty Gateway marketplace. Over $2,000,000 was raised through the sale of the collection, with one song fetching $490,000.

 

The collection consisted of eight things: three audio-visual artefacts sold in open editions, four static artworks sold in two silent auctions and two drawings, and a primary standalone film titled “The Source.” Tesfaye utilised drugs and abused illegal substances like as ketamine, cocaine, MDMA, magic mushrooms, and cough syrup to assist him overcome his writer’s block on his early albums.

He admitted that drugs were a “crutch” for him when it comes to producing songs in December of 2013.  He usually suffixed his initial name with “xo”on social media, which is an emoticon for hugs and kisses.  This was Tesfaye’s objective, according to Hermione Hoby of The Guardian, however some feel it was a reference to his recreational usage of ecstasy and oxycodone.

In advance of the release of Starboy, he changed his social media handles to reflect his stage identity. Tesfaye defined himself as “sober lite” in a cover storey with GQ on August 2, 2021, implying that he has stopped taking strong substances save marijuana. He also admitted to drinking alcohol on occasion, saying, “I’m not a major drinker, like I used to be.” There isn’t any romanticism in drinking.”

Tesfaye avoided interviews in the beginning of his career, preferring to connect through Twitter, which he attributed to shyness and insecurity. Tesfaye remains adamant about not engaging in interviews to this day, only accepting to be interviewed in exceptional circumstances.

Tesfaye’s hairdo, which has been regarded as his most distinctive feature, was said to be partly inspired by Brooklyn graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, notably during Tesfaye’s Beauty Behind the Madness era in 2015.He started growing it out in 2011 and noted on how simple it was to keep up with “a harsh shampoo every now and again.” He shaved his head in 2016, just before the release of Starboy.


Tesfaye is currently based in Los Angeles’ Bel Air neighbourhood. He used to live in a penthouse in Westwood, Los Angeles. Tesfaye bought a property in Hidden Hills, California for $18.5 million in 2017, which he sold to Madonna for $19.3 million in 2021.  He has rented a penthouse in New York City since 2018.  Tesfaye enjoys watching television and playing video games in his spare time.

Tesfaye postponed a scheduled appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with Belly in May 2016 because to the presence of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, despite having previously worked with the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Toronto. Tesfaye was brought up in an Ethiopian Orthodox family. Tesfaye remarked in 2020, “I dunno…everything is a test, and if you are religious or spiritual, you have to go through difficulties.”
