Christine Elizabeth Smith is a former businesswoman and politician who has served as the junior United States senator representing Minnesota since 2018. She is a member of the Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party of Minnesota, which is a Democratic Party affiliate. Before being appointed to fill the United States Senate seat vacated by Al Franken, Smith served as Minnesota’s 48th lieutenant governor from 2015 to 2018.

She defeated Republican Karin Housley, a Minnesota state senator, in the 2018 special election to serve the balance of Franken’s term, which runs until January 2021. Smith won a full Senate term in 2020, defeating Republican nominee and former U.S. Representative Jason Lewis.

Smith was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on March 4, 1958, to Christine Flint, a teacher, and F. Harlan Flint, a lawyer. Smith went to Minnesota in 1984 to work for General Mills in marketing. She went on to launch her own marketing firm, where she provided advice to businesses and organizations. Smith began interested in local politics in the early 1990s, volunteering for DFL races in Minneapolis. Ted Mondale’s unsuccessful governor campaign in 1998 was managed by her.

After Minnesota’s U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone died in a plane crash just weeks before the election in 2002, Smith ran a campaign for the seat with former Vice President Walter Mondale. After losing a close election to Norm Coleman, Smith went to work for Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota as vice president of external relations.

Dayton chose Smith as his running mate in the 2014 gubernatorial election after Lieutenant Governor Yvonne Prettner Solon indicated she would not seek reelection, were noted by him. Smith resigned from his position as Dayton’s chief of staff to run for lieutenant governor. Dayton and Smith defeated Republicans Jeff Johnson and Bill Kuisle in the general election after being selected by acclamation at the DFL state convention and encountering very token opposition in the DFL gubernatorial primary.
