Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939) is a Swiss singer, songwriter, and actor who was born in the United States. She rose to fame as the lead singer of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue before starting a successful solo career. She is widely referred to as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm launched Turner’s career in 1957. She made her first recording, “Boxtop,” in 1958, under the moniker Little Ann. With the breakthrough duet track “A Fool in Love,” she was launched as Tina Turner in 1960. Ike and Tina Turner established themselves as “one of history’s most powerful live talents.”

Before disbanding in 1976, they topped the charts with songs like “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine,” “River Deep – Mountain High,” “Proud Mary,” and “Nutbush City Limits.Turner embarked on “one of music’s greatest comebacks” in the 1980s. Her multi-platinum album Private Dancer, released in 1984, featured the hit song “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” which received the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and became her lone No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.


She was the first female solo artist to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 at the age of 44.  “Better Be Good to Me,” “Private Dancer,” “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome”),” “Typical Male,” “The Best,” “I Don’t Wanna Fight,” and “GoldenEye” helped her maintain her chart position. She broke a Guinness World Record for the largest paid crowd for a solo act (180,000) during her Break Every Rule World Tour in 1988.

Turner also appeared in the movie Tommy (1975), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), and Last Action Hero (1986). (1993). What’s Love Got to Do With It was released in 1993, based on her autobiography I, Tina: My Life Story. Turner announced her retirement in 2009 after finishing her Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour, the 15th highest-grossing tour of the 2000s. Tina, a jukebox musical, was created in 2018 to honour her.

Turner is one of the most successful music artists of all time, having sold over 100 million albums worldwide. She has won a total of 12 Grammy Prizes, including eight competitive honours, three Grammy Hall of Fame awards, and one Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She is the first black woman and the first black artist to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. She was named one of the 100 Greatest Artists and 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine.

Turner is honoured with a star on both the Hollywood and St. Louis Walks of Fame. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once in 1991 with Ike Turner and again in 2021 as a solo artist. Brownsville, Tennessee, the youngest daughter of Zelma Priscilla  and Floyd Richard Bullock, Her father worked as an overseer of the sharecroppers at Poindexter Farm on Highway 180, and the family lived in the surrounding rural unincorporated village of Nutbush, Tennessee, where she grew up picking cotton with her family.

When she spoke with Dr. Henry Louis Gates in the PBS programme African American Lives 2, he released her genealogy DNA test results, which revealed that she was primarily African, about 33% European, and only 1% Native American. Turner used to think she had a lot of Native American blood in her veins.

Evelyn Juanita Currie and Ruby Alline Bullock, Bullock’s older sisters, grew up with him. She’s also Eugene Bridges’ first cousin once removed. When their parents moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, to work at a defence installation during World War II, the three sisters were separated when they were little children.

Bullock moved in with her strict, pious paternal grandparents, Alex and Roxanna Bullock, who served as deacons and deaconesses at the Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church. The sisters met up with their parents after the war and moved to Knoxville with them. The family moved back to Nutbush two years later, to the Flagg Grove neighbourhood, where Bullock attended Flagg Grove Elementary School from kindergarten to eighth grade.


Bullock was a member of the Spring Hill Baptist Church choir in Nutbush as a little girl. When she was 11 years old, her mother Zelma disappeared without notice, relocating to St. Louis in 1950 to get away from Floyd’s abusive relationship.In 1952, her father married another lady and moved to Detroit, two years after her mother left the family. Bullock and her sisters were relocated to Brownsville, Tennessee, to live with their maternal grandmother, Georgeanna Currie.

Turner wrote in her autobiography, I, Tina, that she believed her mother didn’t love her, that she “wasn’t desired,” and that her mother had planned to leave her father while she was pregnant.  Turner writes, “She was a young woman who didn’t want another child.” Bullock worked for the Henderson family as a domestic helper as an adolescent. She was at the Henderson residence when she learned that her half-sister Evelyn, along with her cousins Margaret and Vela Evans, had been killed in a vehicle accident.

Bullock, a self-described tomboy, joined Carver High School in Brownsville’s cheering squad and female basketball team, and “socialised every moment she got.”  Bullock moved to St. Louis with her mother after her grandma died when she was 16 years old. Sumner High School, where she graduated in 1958, was her alma mater.

Bullock went on to work at Barnes-Jewish Hospital as a nurse’s aide after graduation. Turner released All the Best in November 2004, and it was her highest-charting album in the United States, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in 2005. Three months after its debut, the album went platinum in the United States, and seven other nations, including the United Kingdom, followed suit.

Turner was elected to join an elite group of entertainers at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center Honors in December 2005.Turner returned to the public eye in February 2008, when she sang alongside Beyoncé at the Grammy Awards.

She also received a Grammy nomination for River: The Joni Letters, for which she performed as a featured artist. The Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour, which began in October 2008, was Turner’s first tour in in ten years.  Turner issued a greatest hits collection in support of the tour. The tour was a big hit, and it went on to become one of the all-time best-selling tours. Turner announced his departure from the stage in 2009.

Turner’s 1989 song “The Best” was reintroduced to the UK singles chart in April 2010, mostly due to an internet campaign by Rangers Football Club fans, and peaked at No. 9 in the UK. Turner became the first female artist in UK chart history to have six top 40 hits in a row (1960s–2010s).

Beyond’s second album, Children – With Children United in Prayer, was released in 2011, and it charted in Switzerland for the second time. Turner performed on German and Swiss television shows to promote the record. Turner was the oldest person to be featured on the cover of Vogue magazine when he appeared on the cover of the German issue in April 2013, at the age of 73.Love Songs is a new compilation published by Parlophone Records in February 2014.

 

Turner revealed in December 2016 that she was collaborating with Phyllida Lloyd and Stage Entertainment on Tina, a musical based on her life storey.Adrienne Warren stars in the major role, which premiered in London in April 2018.  In the fall of 2019, Warren repeated her Broadway role.

Turner was honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018, and her second memoir, My Love Story, was published in October of same year.In July of 2020, she stepped out of retirement to work on a remix of “What’s Love Got to Do With It” with Norwegian producer Kygo. She became the first artist in the UK to have a top 40 hit in each of the previous seven decades with this release.

Turner’s third book, Happiness Becomes You: A Guide to Changing Your Life for the Better, is set to be published in 2020. Taro Gold, an American novelist, and Regula Curti, a Swiss singer, collaborated on the book.  It was named a Best Nonfiction book of 2020 by Amazon’s editors.  Turner starred in Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin’s documentary Tina, which was released in 2021.

Turner paid $50 million to BMG Rights Management for her music rights in October 2021.Turner was elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist later that month, and she accepted her honour by satellite from her residence in Zurich, Switzerland.On the way to the Dallas Statler Hilton on July 1, 1976, Turner unexpectedly left Ike following a fight.


She made her getaway with 36 cents in her pocket and a Mobil credit card. Turner filed for divorce on July 27, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.  Her divorce petition requested alimony of $4,000 per month, child support of $1,000 per month, and custody of her two sons, Craig and Ronnie.

On March 29, 1978, the divorce was completed. Turner was held accountable for missed concert dates and an IRS lien in the final divorce order. Turner kept songwriter rights from songs she wrote, but Ike received publishing income for both his and Turner’s works.  In addition to her stage name, she kept her two Jaguar automobiles, furs, and jewellery.

Turner granted Ike a portion of their Bolic Sound recording studio, publishing companies, and real estate, while retaining ownership of his four automobiles.  Several promoters suffered financial losses and filed lawsuits to reclaim their losses. She lived on food stamps for nearly two years while paying off bills by playing local clubs.

Ike Turner has declared on several times that he was never legally married to Turner since he was married to another lady at the time of their wedding.Despite the fact that they were married in a common-law relationship, they had to go through a formal divorce.  Martha Nell Bullock, he added, is her birth name (not Anna Mae Bullock). On many contracts, she used her legal name, Martha Nell Turner.

“Sure, I smacked Tina,” Ike Turner admitted in his autobiography Takin’ Back My Name. We had battles, and there were instances when I punched her unconscious. “However, I have never been able to defeat her.”  Roseanne Barr encouraged Ike to apologise to Turner publicly in a 1999 interview on The Roseanne Show.

Ike told Jet in 2007 that he still loved her and that he had drafted a letter to apologise for “putting her and the kids through that kind of stuff,” but he never sent it. Following his death on December 12, 2007, Turner made a brief statement through her spokesman, stating, “Tina hasn’t had any contact with Ike in over 30 years.” “There will be no further comment.”

Turner’s sister, Alline, regarded Ike as a brother-in-law and attended his funeral. At Turner’s funeral, Phil Spector slammed him.  “As an elderly person, I have forgiven him, but I would not work with him,” Turner told The Sunday Times in 2018. I answered, ‘No, definitely not,’ when he requested for another trip with me. You couldn’t forgive Ike and let him back in.
