The UCLA Bruins football team competes in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) competition for the University of California, Los Angeles. They are members of the Pac-12 Conference. Since the 1930s, the Bruins have been ranked in the top ten of the Associated Press poll at least once per decade. Under head coach Red Sanders, they had their first big era of success in the 1950s. In nine years, Sanders led the Bruins to the Coaches’ Poll national championship in 1954, three conference championships, and a 66–19–1 overall record.

Terry Donahue led the Bruins to a 151–74–8 record in the 1980s and 1990s, including 13 bowl games and an NCAA-record eight consecutive bowl victories. The programme has produced 28 first-round NFL draught picks, 30 consensus All-Americans, and a number of significant award winners, including Heisman Trophy winner Gary Beban. The USC Trojans are the UCLA Bruins’ major adversary. In the year 2018, Chip Kelly took over as head coach.

The Bruins won the Pac-12 Conference South Division two years in a row and appeared in both the 2011 and 2012 Pac-12 Football Championship Games. In 1925, Minnesota native William H. Spaulding arrived at UCLA. In 14 seasons as the Bruins’ head coach, he had a 72–51–8 record.

Spaulding led the UCLA Bruins to their first bowl appearance and win in the 1938 Poi Bowl during his time in Los Angeles.  The Bruins also left the SCIAC and joined the Pacific Coast Conference in 1928, under Spaulding’s leadership. With 72 victories under his belt, Spaulding is one of the most successful head coaches in Bruin football history.  After a great fourteen-year reign that ended after the 1938 season, he announced his retirement.

Following the retirement of Spaulding, Edwin C. Horrell was named head coach. In the 1943 Rose Bowl, his UCLA Bruins were defeated by Georgia. He was the first UCLA coach to win a game against USC. It was the UCLA–USC rivalry’s first football triumph. Jackie Robinson, who went on to have a Hall of Fame career in professional baseball, was one of Horrell’s most famous players at UCLA. [ Horrell had a 6–0–4 record in 1939 and a 5–5–1 record in 1941.

Outside of the aforementioned seasons, Horrell’s Bruins had a combined record of 6–22–1 during his tenure.  After six seasons as the head coach of UCLA football, Horrell was fired. In place of Horrell, his alma mater hired Bert LaBrucherie. At UCLA, LaBrucherie had a 23–16 overall record. The Bruins won the Pacific Coast Conference in his second season as head coach, but were defeated in the Rose Bowl by Illinois.

During

his four seasons with the Bruins, LaBrucherie only had one losing season, a 3–7 record in 1948, his final season. Following the 1948 season, LaBrucherie accepted the head football coaching position at California Institute of Technology, leaving UCLA. Kelly was named head football coach of UCLA on November 25, 2017.

He had also gone through the process of interviewing for the position of head coach at the University of Florida. In 2018, for the first time since 1943, the Bruins started the season 0–5. They did, however, defeat USC later in the season to end a three-game losing streak against their crosstown rivals.  UCLA’s season ended with a 3–9 record, their worst since 1971 when they went 2–7–1.

The Bruins started 0–3 the following season, losing by large touchdowns to Cincinnati, San Diego State, and No. 5 Oklahoma. For the first time since 1920–1921, the Bruins began consecutive seasons 0–3 under Kelly. Kelly had the worst 15-game start as a UCLA football coach since Harry Trotter[citation needed] with a 0–3 start in 2019. The Bruins, on the other hand, overcame a 49–17 hole and won 67–63 against No. 19 Washington State the following week. The comeback was the third-largest in FBS history, with a margin of victory of 32 points.

The Bruins were defeated by Oregon State 48–31 at home two weeks after their victory over Washington State. This was only the Beavers’ third road win against a Pac-12 opponent since 2014, and their largest road win against a Pac-12 opponent since a 49–17 victory at California in 2013. For the second year in a row, the Bruins were defeated, dropping them to 1–5.

The Bruins went to Stanford after a bye week and beat the Cardinal 34–16. UCLA defeated Stanford for the first time since 2008, ending an 11-game losing run. The Bruins rushed for 263 yards on 6.1 yards per run in the win, while holding the Cardinal to 198 total yards and only 55 yards rushing. UCLA and USC have an uncommon rivalry in that they are one of only a few Division I FBS programmes from the same city. Both are roughly 10 miles (16 kilometres) apart and are located within the Los Angeles municipal limits.

Until 1982, the two schools played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which they shared until 1982.Every year, the crosstown rivals compete for city bragging rights, the Victory Bell, and (in the past) the chance to play in the Rose Bowl. The series is currently led by USC (2 Southern Cal victories vacated by the NCAA) The UCLA Bruins have an annual rivalry with the California Golden Bears, another in-state conference opponent. Since 1933, the rivals have met 88 times, once each year.

UCLA has a 56–34-1 all-time record versus Cal as of November 28, 2017. With an official capacity of 92,542, the Rose Bowl is a National Historic Landmark in Pasadena, California. Since the 1982 season, it has served as UCLA’s home football field. Since joining the Pacific Coast Conference in 1928, the Bruins’ home games have been held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The rival USC Trojans also play at the Coliseum. An on-campus facility was considered, but it met strong political resistance, especially from Edmund Gerald “Pat” Brown Sr., the governor at the time. After the Trojans, but before the Los Angeles Rams, the Bruins received second priority in the Coliseum schedule. The Long Range Plan of 1963 proposed a 44,000-seat stadium on campus, which would eventually become Drake Stadium.

Influential local citizens, as well as other politicians, opposed the initiative.  The Coliseum was also built by the state of California and is a state-owned property. UCLA opted to relocate out of the Coliseum when the Oakland Raiders became the Los Angeles Raiders in 1982, after lengthy talks with the city of Pasadena.

The Raiders had expected ownership of the Coliseum as well as revenue from luxury box sales. Since moving to the stadium, UCLA has played in five Rose Bowl games, including the inaugural Rose Bowl in 1983. In 1995, UCLA and the then-Los Angeles Raiders were close to partnering with the NFL to build a new stadium at Hollywood Park, but the proposal fell through when Raiders owner Al Davis refused to accept a second NFL club.

Moore Field on the Vermont Ave. campus of the “Southern Branch of the University of California” hosted the Bruins (then known as the Cubs) from 1919 to 1927.Spaulding Field, which features two football fields, one grass and the other artificial turf, or synthetic turf, serves as the football team’s on-campus practise facility. The Bruins do not have a full 100-yard field to practise on due to space constraints. On August 1, 2017, the Wasserman Football Center, located just west of Spaulding Field, was dedicated.

Training and therapy rooms, a weight room, football facilities, the Troy Aikman Strength and Conditioning Center, and locker rooms are all located within the 75,000 square foot facility. Coaches’ offices, a nutrition centre, hydrotherapy pools, conference rooms, and the Terry and Andrea Donahue Team Auditorium are all included within the centre. A barbershop, players’ lounge, recruitment lounge, and patio are among the other amenities available.

“True Blue” and gold were UCLA’s official athletic colours from 2004 until 2017. The “True Blue” is a darker tint than the former powder blue that teams wore. UCLA’s early colours were Yale Blue and California Gold, which were the same as the Golden Bears’.The ocean was represented by blue, while the “Golden State” was portrayed by gold.

Coach Red Sanders altered the football outfits when he arrived at UCLA in 1949 for the 1949 season. Yale Blue has been lightened. The baby blue, Sanders reasoned, would appear better on the field and in films. “Powderkeg blue,” he’d call the baby blue uniform, powder blue with a powerful kick.

To provide the sense of motion, Sanders added the now-famous UCLA Stripe to the shoulders for the 1954 season.  The away jerseys were changed to white with a navy blue and gold shoulder stripe, as well as gold pants. Gold was added to the helmets .The font for the numbers on the uniforms has used Clarendon typeface at times, starting with the 1954 football season. It’s been block numerals for the most part.

In the 1980s, the UCLA lettering was added to the helmets, and the uniform pants were changed to yellow to look better in colour publications. Uniform pants resurfaced in popularity in the 1990s.True Blue was designated as the official colours in 2003. True blue shoulder stripes and numerals were added to the away uniforms in 2006, but navy blue was replaced in 2010. Against Washington and USC in 2009, the Bruins wore a 1967 throwback outfit, though the team’s regular helmet was worn against USC.
