Wizkid (born July 16, 1990) is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who goes by Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun’s stage name. At 11, he began recording music and published a joint CD with the Glorious Five, a group he and a few of his church buddies created.

Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment signed Wizkid to a record deal in 2009. (E.M.E.). After the release of “Holla at Your Boy,” the lead single from his debut studio album, Superstar (2011), which also included the singles “Tease Me/Bad Guys” and “Don’t Dull,” he rocketed to prominence.

Ayo, his self-titled second studio album, was released in September 2014. Six singles were released to promote the album, including “Jaiye Jaiye.” After his contract with E.M.E. expired, Wizkid left. Wizkid rose to international prominence in 2016 due to his collaboration with Drake on the hit single “One Dance,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and 14 other countries.

Wizkid became the first Afrobeats artist to be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records after the song smashed many records. [4] He signed a multi-album deal with R.C.A. Records in March 2017, and his third studio album, Sounds from the Other Side, was released later that year. Five singles were released to promote the album, including Drake’s “Come Closer.”

In 2018, he was featured on Normani and Calvin Harris’ single “Checklist,” which went to number one on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart. He was featured on Beyoncé’s album The Lion King: The Gift the following year on the tune “Brown Skin Girl,” which also went to number one on the World Digital Song Sales chart and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Music Video.


In October 2020, he released Made in Lagos, his fourth album, which was a commercial and critical success, hitting number one on the Billboard World Album Chart. The album features the Terms-assisted track “Essence,” which became the first Nigerian song to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top ten after a Justin Bieber remix.

Wizkid had over 3.4 billion Spotify streams by February 2021, making him the most-streamed Nigerian musician of all time. Wizkid was born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun in Surulere, Lagos, on July 16, 1990.  He was raised in a mixed-faith family with twelve female siblings. His father is an Islamist, and his mother is a Pentecostal Christian. Wizkid was a student at Ijebu Ode Grammar School.

He listened to King Sunny Ade, Fela Kuti, and Bob Marley as a child.  He revealed “his father has three wives” in a radio interview with Tim Westwood in 2012.  In a separate interview with Factory 78 T.V.’s Adesope, Wizkid said he founded the Glorious Five with a couple of his church buddies.  Before disbanding, they managed to release an album. Until 2006, Wizkid went by the stage name Lil Prinz.

He

later met O.J.B. Jezreel, a record producer who put a year’s worth of production on hold for him.  He saw 2 Face Idibia record tracks for his Grass 2 Grace album while frequenting O.J.B.’s Point Beat Studios. During Sound Sultan’s debut album Jagbajantis’ recording sessions, he was also there.

One of the people that taught and guided him when he was 15 years old was Naeto C. Empire Mates Entertainment signed Wizkid to a record deal in 2009. “Omoge You Too Much,” a song from Banky W.’s The W Experience album, was co-written by him.

While honing his skill, he collaborated with Naeto C, Ikechukwu, and M.I. He dropped out of Lagos State University in mid-2009 (LASU). Later, he enrolled at Lead City University but dropped out after two semesters.

In 2009, Wizkid began work on his debut studio album, Superstar. On January 2, 2010, he released “Holla at Your Boy” as the album’s debut single.  He won the Next Rated award at The Headies 2011 for the song nominated for Best Pop Single.

In addition to receiving the honor, the organisers presented him with a 2012 Hyundai Sonata.  At the 2011 Channel O Music Video Awards, the music video was nominated for Most Gifted Newcomer Video. The album’s second single, “Tease Me/Bad Guys,” was released on April 2, 2010. It was released as a freestyle rap at first.

The album’s third single, “Don’t Dull,” was released on December 6, 2010.  Superstar was recorded in Yoruba and English. Empire Mates Entertainment released it on June 12, 2011. Afrobeats, R&B, dancehall, and reggae are all represented on the album.

Wizkid worked with record producers, including E-Kelly, Jay Sleek, Shizzi, DJ Klem, Masterkraft, Q-Beats, and Samklef on Superstar. Banky W., Skales, D’Prince, and Wande Coal all make cameos on the album. It was supposed to be released on February 14, 2011, but it was postponed.

Wizkid held an album launch party at the Eko Hotel & Suites’ Expo Hall on June 12, 2011. Banky W, Skales, 2face Idibia, Samklef, Wande Coal, D’Prince, Olamide, eLDee, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Lynxxx, and Seyi Shay performed at the launch party.  At the 2012 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, Superstar won Best Album of the Year, and he was nominated for Album of the Year at The Headies 2012.

Wizkid toured London in 2012, and on June 4, 2012, he performed at the H.M.V. Apollo.  For E.M.E.’s compilation album, the Empire Mates State of Mind, he collaborated with Banky W., Skales, Shaydee, and Niyola (2012). The tour began in July 2012 and concluded in September 2012. Houston, Dallas, Toronto, Vancouver, New York City, Providence, Calgary, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Chicago were among the cities where E.M.E. acts performed.  Wizkid performed alongside Trey Songz, Tulisa, Kendrick Lamar, and Angel. Wizkid recorded his second studio album, Ayo, between 2012 and 2014. Femi Kuti, Banky W., Seyi Shay, Phyno, Tyga, Akon, and Wale make appearances. Sarz, Shizzi, Uhuru, Del B, Dokta Franz, Maleek Berry, Legendury Beatz, and Spellz worked on the album’s production.

Chosen was the original title. [requires citation] According to MTV Base, the album’s release date was pushed back.  Previously reported that Don Jazzy, Efya, and Olamide would appear on the album. Wizkid unveiled the album’s cover image and tracklisting on September 6, 2014.

Wizkid had planned to release a mixtape in April 2013 before revealing a second studio album.  He revealed the mixtape would be published in April in an interview with Ok! Nigeria T.V. at Disturbing Headquarters in London. It would also feature Wale and Tinie Tempah, he stated.

Wizkid later confirmed that his second studio album would be released on June 12, 2013.  Banky W disclosed the album’s title and discussed the album’s delay in an interview with HipTV. He also provided an expected release date for the record.

Wizkid released the album’s lead song, “Jaiye Jaiye,” on May 2, 2013. Femi Kuti, a Grammy-nominated Nigerian artist, is featured. Wizkid told Showtime Celebrity that he teamed up with Femi Kuti to avoid being stereotyped as a singer whose lyrics are about females, cars, and material possessions.  He performed at the 2013 edition of Felabration, a yearly concert devoted to Fela Kuti, on October 17, 2013.

On October 26, 2013, the Del B-produced “On Top Your Matter” was released as the album’s second single. Sean directed and shot the music video for the song in South Africa.  Wizkid, D’banj, Tiwa Savage, P-Square, Davido, Ice Prince, Burna Boy, Olamide, and Phyno performed at the Guinness Colorful World of More concert on November 2, 2013.

The event was held at the Eko Convention Centre, which is also home to the Eko Hotels and Suites.  He played in the Guinness Big Eruption Concert in Accra, Ghana, on November 23, 2013. Wizkid became the first Nigerian rapper to reach one million Twitter followers in February 2014.

Wizkid visited The Beat 99.9 FM studio in Lagos in July 2014 and informed Toolz that he has worked with Barbadian diva Rihanna.  Wizkid was invited to perform as a special guest on Tinie Tempah’s U.K. tour in 2014.

Wizkid released the music video for “Ojuelegba” on January 5, 2015, about his challenges in the early years of his singing career. Drake and Skepta contribute vocals to the official remix, which debuted on OVO Sound Radio in July 2015.  In October 2014, Wizkid initially revealed that he was working on a new album during a visit to London.

He announced “African Bad Gyal,” a collaboration with Chris Brown, as the lead song from his upcoming third studio album. Wizkid and Chris Brown performed “African Bad Gyal” at Brown’s concert in Durban, South Africa, in April 2015.  In May 2015, Wizkid released “Expensive Shit,” an Afrobeats song with light guitars, saxophone lines, and acoustic percussion that was expected to appear on the album.

Wizkid revealed on Twitter in July 2015 that Angélique Kidjo would appear on the album. He announced in September 2015 that he was releasing an EP and delaying the release of his third studio album. Shortly after 2Face, Idibia’s Fortified tribute event ended on Instagram, and he made the statement.

Following his guest appearance on Drake’s Afrobeats-infused “One Dance” single, which charted at number 21, Wizkid became Nigeria’s first artist to be recognized on Billboard’s Twitter Last 24 hour chart on April 5, 2016.

The song debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list on May 12, 2016, and remained there for ten weeks in a row. “One Dance” became a worldwide blockbuster success, charting in 15 countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, and Germany. The song became Wizkid’s first number-one single as a featured artist in these areas.

On June 5, Wizkid released the promotional track “Like This.” The song debuted on Drake’s OVO Sound Radio in the same month. He signed a record deal with RCA Records in March 2017. On July 14, 2017, Wizkid released his third studio album, Sounds from the Other Side. SFTOS is mostly a Caribbean-influenced album, although it also has Afrobeats, EDM, R&B, and house elements. Drake, Major Lazer, Chris Brown, Ty Dolla Sign, Efya, Bucie, and Trey Songz make cameos on the album.

Sarz, Del B, Spellz, Dre Skull, DJ Mustard, Major Lazer, and the Picard Brothers were responsible for the production. Several music services, including Apple Music, Amazon Music, Spotify, Deezer, and Google Play, made the album accessible for purchase and online listening. Later that year, he sang “Checklist” on Normani and Calvin Harris’ EP Normani x Calvin Harris, which reached number one on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.
