Zinedine Yazid Zidane was born on June 23, 1972, in La Castellane, Marseille, France. He is the fifth and youngest of five siblings. Zidane is a Muslim of Kabyle descent from Algeria. His parents, Smail and Malika, moved to Paris in 1953 from the village of Aguemoune in the Berber-speaking region of Kabyle in northern Algeria, just before the Algerian War began. The family, which had settled in the city’s tough northern districts of Barbs and Saint-Denis, found little work in the area and moved to the northern Marseille suburb of La Castellane in the 16th arrondissement of Marseille in the mid-1960s. His father worked as a warehouseman and nightwatchman at a department store, and he was frequently on call.
Zidane went to AS Cannes for a six-week stay, but ended up staying for four years to play professionally. After leaving his family to attend Cannes, he was invited to leave the dormitory he shared with 20 other trainees and stay with him and his family by Cannes Director Jean-Claude Elineau. Zidane later stated that he found equilibrium while living with the Elineaus. Zidane’s first coaches noticed him to be raw and sensitive, prone to attacking spectators who insulted his race or family. Jean Varraud, his first coach, encouraged him to channel his rage and concentrate on his own game. Zidane spent his first few weeks in Cannes primarily cleaning.
Zidane joined Girondins de Bordeaux in the 1992–93 season, winning the 1995 Interdot Cup after defeating Karlsruhe and finishing runner-up to Bayern Munich in the 1995–96 UEFA Cup in four years. He used a midfield combination with BIXen Lizaranzu and Christophe Dugarry that became a trademark for both Bordeaux and the French national team in 1998. Blackburn Rovers manager Kenny Dalglish expressed interest in signing both Zidane and Dugarry in 1995, to which club owner Jack Walker reportedly responded, “Why do you want to sign Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?” According to football agent Barry, this occurred at the start of the 1996 season as well.
Zidane is a citizen of both France and Algeria. It was rumored that Algerian coach Abdelhamid Kermali denied Zidane a place in the squad because he thought the young midfielder was too slow. However, in a 2005 interview, Zidane denied the rumour, claiming that he would have been ineligible to play for Algeria because he had already played for France. Zidane was a member of the French under-21 team that won bronze at the Languedoc-Roussillon Mediterranean Games in 1993. On 17 August 1994, he made his debut for France as a substitute in a friendly against the Czech Republic, which ended in a 2–2 draw after Zidane scored twice to help France overcome a 2–0 deficit.
France won Euro 2000 two years later, becoming the first team to win both the World Cup and the European Championship since West Germany in 1974. Zidane finished with two goals, a bending free kick against Spain in the quarter-finals and the game-winning penalty against Portugal in the semi-finals. UEFA named Zidane the Tournament’s Player. “I. ‘Zizou’ shone brightly from the first game against Denmark to the final against Italy, casting a spell on his opponents.
